When I read this article, 10 Crazy Vacation Ideas for Thrillseekers, I thought to myself, “Lovely in theory… but there is no way in hell would I want to expend that much effort on my vacation.” I want (actually, I need) to go on a guilt-free, relaxing vacation. Somewhere that offers you no choice but to sit. To meditate. To watch the sunset. To read, converse without distractions, and unplug. I’d like to adventure to some exotic location that doesn’t make one feel guilty about doing nothing, because there is literally no other option than to just be. In my mind, I would actually be contributing to humanity by taking this type of remote vacation. Let’s work together to make K2 a less crowded climb, shall we?
In these fabulous worry-free vacation destinations, you will not be faced with the paradox of choice. No cliff jumping, adrenaline pumping adventures to contemplate, nor will you feel like you have to talk yourself into bungee jumping and Instagramming your way through an overambitious week off. Just say no to that, and treat yoself to one of the following shut-the-front-door, humbling-status-beautiful destinations.
1) Maldives
It would be really simple to pitch this vacation idea to a loved one. Just show them the picture, and say “Take me there. Now.”
2) Zihautanejo, Mexico
Fellow WorldLifestyle writer Linda recommended Zihautanejo, and sold me on the idea… "Zihautanejo, Mexico was a very strange place for this Alaska girl to be over Christmas her sophomore year of college, as it is HOT, but I absolutely loved it. The people. The vistas. The food. The chill atmosphere where everyone just casually loved beach life. We met so many awesome friends in Zihau (as the locals call it), and I've been aching to go back ever since."
3) Glacier National Park, Montana
Glacier National Park has been on my mind for quite some time. Who needs to leave the U.S. for travel when we have exotic destinations like this on our own great land!? Plus, let’s be honest. It’s much more cost effective to travel to Montana to see a lake than it is to travel to Geneva.
4) Anguila
Ah, Anguila. I’ve had this picked out as the destination for my honeymooning self since I was 12 years old. Perhaps I would first need a boyfriend, but I’m not letting that stop my travel plans.
5) Cahuita, Costa Rica
This location offers the best of both worlds – here, the beautiful jungle meets the deep blue, exotic sea. I love the idea of this destination so much that I planned a yoga retreat there! Interested in coming along? Retreat to Cahuita’s The Goddess Garden eco-sanctuary with Los Angeles yoga instructor Chaz and moi this summer! Find more info on this adventure here.
6) Grand Tetons, Wyoming
Waking up to a view of the Tetons is the equivalent of waking up inside of a post card. The beauty is unreal, whether you go during the winter months when everything is covered in snow or in the summer months when the incredible open land is covered in wildflowers. Perhaps I’ll get married here, then head for Anguila.
7) Saumur, France
My dad spent his childhood here, exploring the historic castles and dangling his feet over the riverbed. This is a place for your inner youth – a destination where you can throw caution to the wind, let the architecture inspire wonder, and simply enjoy the view.
8) Cruz Bay, St. John
The only requirements here are to arrive, sit, and watch the boats sail in and out of the harbor. Heaven, amIright?
9) San Gimignano, Italy
I studied Astronomy abroad in Italy during college (well, mostly culture… a little astronomy). As my professor would say, little Tuscan towns like San Gimignano offer “fine wines... and beauttiffull views.” Really, what other ingredients are needed for a relaxing getaway? Plus, the Under the Tuscan Sun villa can be found here. I know I’m not the only one thinking moving into it is part of my future.
10) Pemaquid Point, Maine
There is something so calming, and so Nicholas-Sparks-romantic about lighthouses. Meandering around the salty harbors of Maine, eating delicious lobster for most meals, and finding a secluded granite slab to meditate on made for one of the most incredible vacations I’ve ever taken.
